The Cleveland Way ~ Whitby

After a combined rest day and move day to Whitby, we caught the bus  on Monday to Saltburn by the Sea to continue The Cleveland Way. Having left the moors behind, we will now walk along the coast. The day started off with a bit of a cool breeze, however, as the day continued along the coast, it brightend up considerably. We descended down to Staithes, which is a beautiful coastal village, where we stopped for an ice cream and then continued on up to the cliff top to the pretty village of Runswick Bay. Once we got to the heart of the village, we were able to get a quick drink in before catching the bus back to Sandsend, where we were staying.

Todays walk was a reasonably short walk, considering all the other days walking. We picked up the path at Runswick Bay and walked across the beach initially and then making a steep ascent back up to the cliff top, eventually dropping down to Sandsend, where we continued along the road to our campsite, just outside of Whitby

Wednesday we followed the route from outside the campsite, through to Whitby, which is a vibrant town. And of course, we had to go down and then do the 199 steps up to the Abbey to pick up the coastal path onto
Robin Hood's Bay. This is lovely walk, albeit very up and down, as are most coastal walks. It was also rather a hot day. Robin Hood's Bay is yet another pretty coastal village.

Thursday we had a rest day and we all went our own separate way. Steve and I took a stroll into Whitby and had a mouch around. We then went to the Lobster hatchery that they've just set up in Whitby, nothing quite like the one in Padstow, but still, it was interesting and we had a great chat with the staff there whilst we were looking in all the fish tanks. We then went to Magpies Cafe, famous for it's fish menu 😂

Friday, a long days walk. Robin Hood's Bay to Scarborough. 14 miles, not just any old 14 miles, but 14 miles of hard slog and it was an exceptionally hot day too, which didn't help. But it was a lovely walk, despite the continuous ascents and decents. When we finally arrived we were all exhausted. This picture is at the start of the walk. We didn't look like that at the end

Saturday, our last walking day. Scarborough to Filey, where hopefully Whiskey John will be waiting to pick us up and take us back to Whitby. Another warm day, but not too hot thankfully. We started off walking along the prom and around from North Bay to South Bay, where we walked along the beach and then picked the trail up, and of course, it was up, to the cliff top. There were some beautiful views all along this walk, as in fact there have been with all the coastal walks we have done this week. You just have to stop and take in the views. We arrived at Filey and hurrah, Whiskey John was there to meet us. We all stopped for light refreshments at the end of the walk and congratulate ourselves on our achievement.

Once we were back at site, we met up and headed out for our farewell dinner. All in all, a very enjoyable and challenging at times, walk. We were very lucky with the weather, only encountering a couple of light showers.
