Velez Blanco -Easter 2024
So we left the costa and moved on up into the mountains for Easter. We were prepared for it to be cold, wet and windy. Afterall, we were 1000m high in the Sierra Maria National Park.. However, we were pleasantly surprised. The village is a very nice place, with its own castle, which is currently being restored. The campsite, empty at the moment, will be busy later for Easter. However, it is a walkers location. our view from our pitch is quite stunning.
Sunday, we decided to take a stroll to the Castle, which we had a look around. To be honest, there isn't much to see, but it was still nice to have a wander around. After that, we had a look around the village and stopped off for some lunch and then headed back to the campsite.
Monday, we took a walk to the next town, Velez Rubio. This was quite a walk in and around the countryside. We eventually got there, although it had started to drizzle but by this time, however, it was still warm and we actually managed to not get wet. Quite remarkable. There's not much to say about Velez Rubio, other than it has a nice Cathedral.
Tuesday and Wednesday were not very good days, very strong winds which were quite cold. So
we basically, went into the village just to get some exercise, fresh air and change of scenery. However, Thursday was a much better day and we decided to walk to the next village, Maria, which is some 9k away, although we were doing this on a track around the mountain. This was a challenge in itself, in trying to find the start of the walk 😂, however, eventaully we did. It was quite a hike uphill, to a view point which was beautiful. The wind was coming in when we reached it and it was quite cold, but still very enjoyable. This we believed to be the half way point, if not further to Maria. We stopped here and retraced our steps. It was a long day, but very enjoyable.

Friday we took it easy after our walk yesterday. We strolled into the village for a wander and then in the evening, we went to the bar for food and Bingo! yes, they asked us to stay and play Bingo. I told them I could only count to 10, which they found quite amusing. However, I did incredibly well and only had 2 left before I went out. However, it was not to be 😊. Saturday, we walked through the village and out to the mountain we've named 'Table Top'. We only went to the base and also to The Tor, which didn't amount to much! In the evening, we went back to the bar for more Bingo.
After that, we didn't do much in Velez Blanco. We tried to do the Maria walk again and actually get to Maria, but ha, we made a mistake, well actually my fault if I'm to be honest. I misinterpreted the map. We did a nice walk, albeit very long and not to where we wanted, but all the same enjoyable. We then prepared to leave Velez Blanco and head for the coast and starting to make our way towards Santander.
