The New Forest ~ 29th September - 5th October 2023
Horses everywhere. We arrived Friday and got ourelves set up quickly. We are at a nice site in the heart of The New Forest, between Brockenhurst and Burley, in the thick of The New Forest. Not a lot going on here, a good 2-3 miles walk to the village. But it is peaceful and quiet. Pizza van arrived early evening, so we tucked into that. Saturday we strolled into the nearest village, Bransgore where we stopped for refreshment and then a look around. We then continued our walk in a loop back to site. Actually, we got a bit lost, but we got there in the end๐.
Sunday we picked up a trail which we followed for some miles, through the forest and open scrub land. We eventually ended up on a cycle track, Burley to Brockenhurst, which we are planning on doing later in the week. We then stopped at The Old Station tea rooms at Holmsley for some light refreshment and a bite to eat. We then strolled back to camp. All in all a very pleasant day.
onto the cycle path to Burley. This was a lovely walk, with yet again lots of ponies all around. We picked up the road into Burley and stopped for some lunch at The Cider Pantry and Tearooms. Very nice, although we didn't have any cider๐. After lunch, we continued on to Burley and had a look around the village and then picked up another track that led us back down to the cycle path. We passed Burley Golf course and cricket club, the cricket ground was fenced in, but the gold course had ponies and cows on it. Must be pretty difficult playing with these on the course. A lovely day and most enjoyable walk.
Tuesday we took the cycle path from Burley to Brockenhurst. This was quite a pleasant cycle ride, along an old railway path. We did have to at one point get on the road but it was only briefly. Thankfully it was quite a flat ride. Once we got to Brockenhurst we stopped for some lunch and at that point it chucked it down with rain. However, by the time we were leaving it had all dried up. Been a while since we've been on the bikes, but despite weary legs, we had a good cycle ride.
Wednesday, we headed out to Burley.
We had to laugh.
We stopped off just outside where we are staying and visited a WWII Memorial. There were 12 airfields within the local vicinity during the war and just in this immediate area we can quite clearly see a couple of the old run ways. Quite amazing and as alway very moving.
Well, today is our last day, we are off home tomorrow. A lovely few weeks away. As always, most enjoyable.
