Fairlight Woods, Pett, East Sussex ~ 6th September 2023
A week in a lovely site in a small village called Pett, between Rye and Hastings. As a young child, I had a weeks family holiday in Fairlight, so was interested to it, not that I remembered much about it, if truth be known. It is still pretty rural here and the site we are at is very nice and very quiet. The only noise we get are the owls at night or the squirrels searching for acorns, which there are plenty of. Never seen so many oak trees. A lovely location, with a short walk through the woods to the pub which serves great food too and a local butches in the village, selling great food for us to BBQ when the mood takes us. As you know the weather has been exceptionally hot, although it has been a few degrees cooler here and with all the shade on site, we've managed to remain quite cool, which is a good thing.
Thursday, we headed off to Hastings on the bus for a look around, a stroll along the seafront, a look at the old town and also the net huts and the maritime museum. We stopped for a bite to eat and guess what, a man cycled past absolutely naked, yes naked! Shock horror. Apparently he does it all the time. Well he did have a nice all over tan, but really. It didn't put me off my food but it was certainly a topic of discussion with the ladies on the table next to us 😄.
Friday we got a lift in with a couple who are on our site, to Rye. This is a rather pretty, quaint old town. We had a mouch around and then headed for the harbour and picked up the coastal path and walked back to Fairlight Woods. We stopped for lunch on the coastal path and then continued on our trek, stopping briefly at the pub for light refreshment. It was really quite hot by now and this was much needed. And then back through the woods to our site. A long, exhausting walk but most enjoyable.
Saturday as it was so hot, we decided to walk the local woods and as we were a little tired from yesterdays walk, we decided to take it easy. Sunday, we walked to Fairlight itself and along the cliff top back to Pett Levels. Funny, I thought that when we stayed at Fairlight, we were on a farm and walked through a couple of fields down to the beach, but I gather you can't reach the beach from Fairlight, so clearly my memories are not quite accurate. In the evening, we popped to the pub to watch the rugby.
Monday we did a long walk, starting off in our woods and picking up the 1066 trail. We followed this for some way, not really seeing many people at all, our only company being, shep, cows, a fox and frightenly a bull who was very interested in us. We skirted the field and then 10 minutes later, realised we'd gone wrong and needed to go back. I refused, there was no way I was going back. So our walk was extended somewhat as we went totally out of our way, but in the end picked up our trail and back home. A nice walk, long and tiring, but enjoyable.
Tuesday we didn't really do much at all, just pottered around and got ourselves ready as we're moving on to Bognor Regis.
