Grassington, Yorkshire Dales ~ 16th - 23rd July 2023

We arrived Sunday after a lovely drive through the Peaks and into the Yorkshire Dales. We are here for a week and once we'd got ourselves settled, we met up with the ICA group, some people having gone home and some just arriving. So a slight change to the group. However, as is the way with the ICA, tea and cake to start the week. Later though we met again for a little tipple to celebrate Jo & Sandy's 57th wedding anniversary.

Monday, Steve & I, with Bob, Neil & Judith, headed off to Bolton Abbey where we started our walk along the Wharfe river. It's quite an undulating walk to begin with through woods but flattens out as you follow the river. In parts the river was raging, with a fast current bubbling over boulders. We were lucky to see a Kingfisher flying speedily along the surface. We also saw a few Herons and Sand Martins. We then stopped for a pub lunch and met up with Clive & Sue, who then walked the rest of the way back to Grassington with us. All in all we did 12 miles. We then in the evening went to Heather & Rons, with Clive & Sue and played Mexican Trains. A very enjoyable day and evening

Tuesday wasn't too good weather wise. Most went out for a cycle ride, but we decided to give it a miss this time and just strolled into Grassington, where we stopped for some lunch, had a browse around the village and then headed back to camp. Early evening, we all met up for dinner at the local pub. Steve and I then went back to Judith & Neils for a chat about New Zealand and more Mexican Trains, at which I did absolutely appallingly🤣

Wednesday we hitched a ride with Judith & Neil into Skipton. We first of all just walked around the town and market and then headed off to the castle. We walked around the castle following the river and into the castle woods. We did a circular walk, finishing back at the town. After this, we headed down to the canal for some lunch. We then strolled along the canal and out into the open countryside before catching the bus back to camp.

Thursday Steve and I headed off on our own to walk
along Whafedale in the other direction. Judith dropped us off at Buckden and then we picked up the Dales Way following the Wharfe river to Kettlewell and then up to the top of the dale looking down over the valley. This was quite a trek but most enjoyable. It took longer than anticipated but we were back to site in time for our evening meal out at the other local pub. A great day but we were both exhausted. 14 miles in total !

Friday, the rain was set to come in today. A few went  off to a county show about an hour away, which we initially wanted to go to, but because of the weather and our somewhat tiredness, we gave it a miss. As it turns out, the day was glorious here. We did walk into Grassington and stopped for some lunch and then ambled back to site. We had dinner that evening with Bob, which was very pleasant.

Saturday, well it just rained all day. We all had coffee & cake with Bob in the morning before he set off to visit family. We didn't do anything during the day but in the evening went to Judith & Neils for more games. Again, I did very badly at everything 🤔. I tell you that Judith is good 😄.

It's been a great 3 weeks away in the Peaks & Yorkshire Dales catching up with friends and making some new ones too.
