Albarracin 3rd - 10th April

Monday we arrived at Albarracin. We've been here before in 2016 with John and Pat who came for a couple of days too whilst we were here. It is a beautiful small medieval town up at 1000m+ with the ruins of a Moorish castle on the cliff top. Needless to say being up high, it's going to be sooo cold at night πŸ₯Ά. In the sub zeros. A bit of a shock after Javea.

Tuesday, we decided to head into town and familiarise ourselves again. We started off doing the river walk, that follows the town half way round. Once we'd passed the old millhouse, we gradually headed up into the town. It's not changed much at all. Still very beautiful with little narrow cobbled old streets and timber frames buildings. After lunch, we headed up to the castle ruins. On our previous visit, we walked along the top of the ruins, not allowed to do that now, very dangerous really, but hey that was then, this is now😁. We also found a couple of walking routes that we wanted to do that we remembered from last time. So all in all a most enjoyable day. We finished it off having a beer on the terrace at the campsite.🍻

Wednesday, we headed off on a walk to the next village, Gea de Albarracin. We remembered that this is a long hard walk but beautiful. After climbing up, we eventually could see the village in the distance. It took us a good 2.5 hours but was worth it. The village is quite deceptive. When driving past to Albarracin, it looks nothing special, but when we walk there, it is quite a pretty place. Walking through an archway and you are in yet another quaint old village. Stopping in the park by the river for lunch, we then looked around the village and then headed back. A tough old day, 12 miles and quite a steep climb up and down again. Needless to say we slept very well 😴

Thursday we thought we would take it easy, so we headed into the town, looking through parts of the town we hadn't been to on Tuesday. I think we have completed the town now, it's only very small and we tend to end up in the main square quite quickly. However, we found a nice restaurant, that we had been to last time with Pat and John, so we stopped off there for a nice late lunch. Very enjoyable

Friday we headed out of town along the river to pick up a walk that took us up and out of the town in amongst the hills heading towards Monterde de Albarracin. We've done this walk before but really couldn't remember too much about it other than vague idea of where we picked the trail up. It was a blazing hot day and whilst we enjoyed the walk, it was very peaceful and quiet with not a sole around, it was a bit samey. So after a while, we turned around and returned home.
Saturday, we lazed around a bit in the morning then mid afternoon we headed off on a walk along a stream into the gorge and eventually to the recreation area. The walk was quite shaded which was very pleasant. Bouldering is the big thing here and we came across a number of people bouldering, which basically is climbing up an overhang without the aid of ropes or anything with just a very thick pad at the bottom, should you fall. We eventually got to the look out point which gave a fabulous view out across the valley. It ended up being quite a long walk in the end, so once back at site, we stopped off for a couple of 🍻.
Sunday, after a lovely breakfast at the bar on site, we took our time in the morning and then later in the day strolled into town. We had a quick wander around and then stopped at the Albarracin Hotel for lunch, which was most enjoyable. We then headed back home late in the afternoon.
Monday, a long walk that took us nowhere really. A shame as we climbed up past the castle up to the top of the hill where we were really quite high and then we walked along a track that ambled up and down for quite a way. Not much shade though and in the end we decided to turn around and head back. We still managed to do some miles mind you. As this is our last day here, we decided to go back into the town in the evening for a meal. We tried a new restaurant and have got to say that the food was superb. All in all, a very nice stay in Albarracin 😊.
