Devizes - The Kennet and Avon Canal ~ July 2022
So here we are at Devizes in Wiltshire, we are based on the Kennet and Avon Canal. Ironically, we cycled the canal with Vicki and David a long time ago. We arrived here Monday and then on Tuesday, we set off along the canal walking towards the series of lochs that make this canal famous, 16 lochs on this stretch, not to mention the numerous lochs to get here. It was a nice day and a lovely stroll. At the top of the lochs there is a cafe, where we stopped for a light lunch. We then continued on to the village of Devizes where we took a stroll and then returned back to camp. A nice start to our stay here.
Wednesday, we took a stroll in the other direction. Again another nice day for a stroll. The river was busy today, with a number of barges chugging up and down, still having to go through a couple of lochs and narrow bridges. We ended up at The Barge pub, where we stopped for lunch. A lovely pub looking out over the canal, it was great watching all the activity on the water. After lunch, we then just headed back to camp. All very enjoyable. We've seen quite a few herons whilst we've been here. Looking hard for a Kingfisher
Thursday, we headed off for a walk along the river, up towards the lochs, but turned off at the bottom of the flight and over the canal and onto the 'Diamond Jubilee' woods. This was a pleasant walk and actually expanded quite some way, but we just stayed to the side of the walk and continued our way up the river to the top of the lochs and where the cafe is. We stopped here again for some lunch and then headed back down the river following the usual route. Very pleasant.
A glorious day Friday. I quickly headed off up to the village to get some supplies. It's such a lovely place with the most beautiful cottages and houses. Once I returned, we headed off for a walk starting off on the river and then deviated via a path up through the fields to the village of Rowde. We followed through the village to the outskirts to our destination 'The Rowdey Farm Cafe'. A lovely location, specialising in ice-cream, which is very popular down here, We had lunch here. We were quite tired and hot after our walk and enjoyed the lovely scenery around us, surrounded by rolling hills and animals. A Red Kite up in the sky above, a couple of donkeys and horses, a Rae and geese oh and an Alpaca. Our return journey we headed off towards the river but picked up the Diamond Jubilee woods. Again we skirted the outside of the woods and then picked up the river at the bottom of the lochs. We really must do the centre of the woods whilst here.
